The Business Of Maintenance & Supply Chain In Guaranteeing Superior Performance

Having spent the last 17 years as an active professional interacting with folks in maintenance, supply chain and other departments its become evident that while some results are generated there is a lot being left on the table which could be to an assets advantage. Stakeholders in any business venture focus on maximizing profits alongside other goals and would make decisions with these ends in mind. Now imagine professionals adopting the model of thinking like actual stakeholders which they are or simpler terms like business owners. How would this change their actions and decision making. Would their actions remain the same as is or take a different trajectory. In this presentation we take an unusual dive in distilling business school insights into maintenance and supply chain processes with real life examples where this integration resulted in superior people and asset performance. The goal is to create a paradigm shift in the viewpoint of attendees from employees and professionals to stakeholders in the business the work in.

Using BOMs to Optimize Planning and Scheduling

After almost 32 years of service, Jeff Smith retired from Fairfax Water. After taking a summer sabbatical, Jeff was hired at Loudoun Water to become LW Manager of Master Data Programs. Jeff quickly realized a quick win to better optimize planning and scheduling at LW by implementing Bill of Materials. Using his change management experience Jeff found some key business users that were looking for a better way to maximize their SAP system. In a short three-month period, LW now has over 1,000 pieces of equipment that now have BOMs assigned. Using standard SAP transactions, using already established Master Data Governance Process in place at LW, Jeff was able to find the data he needed to implement BOMs at Loudoun Water.

Lessons Learned:
•Find key business users to help champion this change
•Hold small workshops or meetings to win over key management personnel
•Validate and verify data
•Bill of Materials can make planning more efficient

Enabling A Resilient And Sustainable Supply Chain

Over the past 2 years, the risks and shortfalls in our global supply chains have been front and center as companies looked to reduce risk and increase resiliency. As we look to the future, sustainability will join resiliency as a main theme. Supply Chains are now seen as central to business survival, success, and growth, rather than an opportunity to just reduce costs. This session will discuss the key enablers of a resilient and sustainable supply chain.

Thirty Years of ERP (SAP) - What Have We Learned?

Today most firms have or are implementing an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. Alan was first introduced to the ERP concept in 1991 when he was asked to serve on a team to assess the available hardware-software platforms for ERP and recommend one for BASF. The consensus decision was to acquire the SAP R2 ERP platform. Through the years BASF has evolved through SAP R3, APO and now S/4 HANA. Alan spent over 25 years supporting implementation of the ERP concepts and software as a consultant and educator. In this presentation he will share lessons learned, barriers to overcome and keys to success. The content is full of real-life examples. Participants will leave better prepared to improve the use of ERP (SAP) processes and systems.

- How to avoid some of the major pitfalls of ERP implementation and use.
- Some tips for scoping and supporting the ERP evolution.
- Examples of balancing people-process-technology in the quest for ERP excellence.

Structural Assets Master Data Development

Overtime, structural assets have been managed through a reactive maintenance approach where attention is given to evident defects leading a lot of capital required to address the structural findings. Debswana Diamond Company has since adopted a more proactive approach towards structural assets maintenance due to a challenge of aging structures in its mines. To achieve the baseline for proactive maintenance, which would form a good platform for predictive maintenance and use of technology, data quality proved to be a challenge hence a quest to develop structural assets master data and integrate structural assets into company maintenance management system. The company utilizes SAP as the Site Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software where Plant Maintenance (PM) module is used for maintenance management and structural assets were not well represented as the predominant maintenance was for equipment We first had to put necessary governance and guidelines in place to ensure consistent implementation and onboarding with alignment to requirements for an asset management system as outlined in ISO 55000 to 55002. Necessary training and change manage is in place to ensure continued utilization of new Structural Integrity Maintenance System (SIMS). In addressing the Structural Master data, a structural asset register was developed by breaking down structures within the plant to practical asset groups as well as maintenance blocks, sub-structures and then elements through established Functional Location (FLocs) for practical inspection and maintenance planning in SAP. The FLocs thus became the foundation for asset critical analysis, material quantification, development of maintenance plans, tactics, strategy & schedule location for Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), integrated with the life cycle cost forecast as an output from practical condition survey data. Structural asset register serves as a foundation for SAP integration with digital space (SAP 3D) and predictive maintenance tools to enable the company’s structural maintenance and rehabilitation life of mine program

3. Development of Structural Maintenance Tactics in alignment Life Cycle Costin (LCC)

Making Sure Your Inventory Optimisation Projects Succeed: A Collection of Case Studies

As you tackle working capital improvement you will encounter reasons why inventory levels should not be touched. Your optimisation success will be determined by how you can convince those around you that stocks are too high. They will also need to trust your stock level recommendations. For this you will need data, and SAP has plenty of it!

This data is easily accessed and collated to build compelling optimisation recommendations. You will need to marry this data with tribal knowledge that is woven into your company’s DNA, which is often linked to painful memories of a time the plant stood because parts were not available.
In this talk we’ll use a collection of 15 years of case studies to:
1. Walk through the kinds of resistance you will encounter (using real-life examples).
2. Offer insights on the SAP data you can use to build working capital improvement storylines.
3. Share tips on how to shift the hearts and minds of those attached to having warehouses and yards full of stock.
4. Demonstrate how to use SAP’s working capital tools to track progress.
5. Cover steps to ensure sustainable working capital improvement.

Why Asset Management is Key to Sustainability

No organization today can neglect Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) which includes Sustainability. CSR is integrated into most organizations’ vision, mission, and strategy. It’s also a factor in Asset Management decision making. Organizations striving to provide Assurance about achieving their objectives face risks including: environmental impacts, staff safety, product quality, asset integrity, and the like. All of these may impact businesses negatively.

As a consequence, Asset Management (as balancing performance, cost, and risk) needs to support the organization's corporate Sustainability goals.

In the presentation, it will be pointed out how the SAP EAM software portfolio, supporting the discipline of Asset Management, can help with this. Diving into various topics, like Asset Performance Management, Asset Investment Planning, Environment, Health & Safety, Compliance Reporting, up to Maintenance Execution, the holistic role of Asset Management will become clear. The value proposition for Sustainability comes from integrating respective data into each and every business process. Given the integrated nature of Asset Management, the underlying paradigm is no different.

Being able to come up with a model for jointly realizing on the goals of Sustainability and Asset Management requires a coherent Digital Twin of the asset system and consequently the digitalization of the respective business processes.

For Business, Blockchain Needs Identities

"Immutable" trust is provided by public blockchain. Rather than having a person witness, the internet can serve as that witness. However, so far, the majority of cryptocurrency and blockchain advances have relied on anonymous wallets. And it isn't going to work in the business world. Come find out why!

Although blockchain operates in a "decentralized" environment, business can only be centralized. It means that bridges must be built in order for this to happen. Wallets are now being overlooked in the business dialogue. They are, nevertheless, the foundation for making this happen. Whether or not it is used, the blockchain disruption brought on by the ability to be a "witness" to transaction is here to stay.

Enterprise Asset Management - Innovative SAP Standard Solutions For The FMCG Industry, A Successful Case Study

In 2021 we've done a massive implementation on our Plant Maintenance side for KWV. There was a big underutilization of data. Together with months of planning, our budget was severely constrained due to all the covid limitations. This has forced us to develop very innovative systems, processes, data governance protocols, reporting and to this end, a year later, effective forecasting models. I’ve realized that many companies in the FMCG sector has gone under severe constraints, not only budget, but resources, skills and many of these companies would benefit from ‘as close to’ automated systems as possible. These key aspects has been our focus point. Let me take you through our successful implementation. Show you how we’ve setup everything from data integrity, configuration, master data governance protocols, periodic reporting, scheduled maintenance, building history, non-conformance benchmarks, document management, staff distribution, dashboards and ultimately an intelligent forecasting model not only for the working environment, but the financial/budget sector as well. All of this, with standard SAP & Excel. A self-sustaining, workable solution & successful case study for you and your business.

Integrated Business Planning for MRO

In asset intensive industries the use of spare parts in maintenance requires a focus on the availability of the spare parts and make sure that the internal maintenance service level is acceptable. Integrated Business planning for Maintenance Reliability and Operations (IBP for MRO) addresses the planning of these spare parts to evaluate the intermitted usage or even regular usage of these spares. IBP uses predictive algorithms in forecasting and inventory variability to calculate the best possible safety stock levels and it does this regularly by taking into account the corrective maintenance spare part usage, planned or preventative maintenance requirements and also projects.

Digital Disruption In The World of Procurement in Africa

Digital Disruption is transforming the way we interact, communicate and operate in our business. Globally disruptive technologies are creating entirely new business models. This is happening across all businesses, and Procurement as a function is very much at the centre of this discussion. Especially in times like these when the global economy is highly volatile and fragile, organizations are looking to better manage their spend, drive efficiency, resilient supply chains, and sustainability through digital procurement transformation.

MRO Data Management Is No Longer A ‘Want’, It’s A ‘Need And A Must-Have’!

Having high-quality data is no longer something that can be viewed as ‘just a pipe dream’ that you hope will magically happen, it's now a must but it will not happen on its own. Steps must be taken, people must be given ownership, processes must be reviewed and adjusted to ensure the data is at the centre of attention, and tools must be provided to tie the people and processes together. Phew, that’s a mouthful!

Effective MRO Materials Management through the use of high-quality data has the potential to deliver significant savings in the form of cash and cost reductions, time and noise reductions, and process automation (AI and ML concepts depend on it)!

During this hour I will talk through some key learnings from my 30-year career and a few ideal milestones that all MRO Data Quality Roadmaps should contain.
